Relaxed Hair Care

Tips on caring for relaxed hair

Many women have transitioned to a natural style because either their hair broke off and became unhealthy or they just simply got tired of wearing a relaxed or “permed” style.  Caring for relaxed hair is not as hard as it seems.  Here are a few basic do’s and don’ts to “relaxed hair care.”

DO NOT relax too often! Relaxers should be applied no more than once every 6-8 weeks. Relaxing your hair too often causes breakage because there is not enough new growth to effectively apply the relaxer without overlapping it on the previously relaxed hair.

DO NOT over use heat styling. Flat irons and curling irons should not be apart of your daily routine. Eventually, your ends will get thinner and your hair will have heat damage. Instead, try styles like roller sets, wraps, and other styles that do not require the use of heat as maintenance.

DO NOT hold on to those damaged ends. Split ends is like a rope, the ends just continue to split and unravel.  They look thin and no amount of moisturizer can get them to look right. I know that you need them to hold on just a little bit longer, but what you may not realize is that they are silently causing more damage. Soon your head full of beautiful hair that only needed a slight trim now needs about 3 inches removed.

Now the hard part is over, lets look at what you can do.

DO make sure your using the correct strength of relaxer for your hair. If the relaxer is too mild it may not yield the results you want, but if the relaxer is too strong it can cause major breakage.

DO wear protective hair styles. These are styles where your hair requires little to no manipulation, hence the word “protective” style. Buns, braids, twists, wigs, and weaves are all examples of protective styling.

DO condition your hair every time you shampoo. Our hair needs moisture, especially chemically treated hair. Make sure both the shampoo and conditioner your using is geared toward moisture.

DO take vitamins. Yes, ladies they help aid in hair health too. Just as an athletes would take supplements to enhance the performance of their limbs so must you supplement to support the strength of your hair.

Hope you find these tips helpful! Happy Hair!
